YANA wins big from pub's golf tournamentComox Valley Echo Friday, June 13, 2008 For YANA, receiving the proceeds of a charitable golf tournament was like scoring a hole-in-one. The charity was elated to pick up a cheque for $5,129 from Billy D's pub and bistro in downtown Courtenay this week. It will go a long way to helping a lot of families stay together at times of illness, said YANA director Jim Gordon. The group, whose initials stand for You Are Not Alone, assists parents who are anxious to spend time with children sent off the Island for medical help in hospital - usually on the Lower Mainland but sometimes in Alberta and even the US. "This is a phenomenal donation," said Gordon. "It will do so much to help so many." Billy D's owner, Eddie Bourassa, was also amazed at the result of the fifth annual memorial tournament, which had been held at Sunnydale Golf Course in Courtenay. "I knew when 71 players signed up that was a record number, but I couldn't believe how much we ended up collecting for YANA," he said. "We just kept counting more and more - it ended up being $1,000 more than our previous best." He paid tribute to 67 businesses who had contributed to the success of the tournament, offering special thanks to Tom McAllister, Mark Middleton at Golfer's Edge and Emily Meyer for their involvement. pround@comoxvalleyecho.com |
